Freddie's Dream Factory

Bonnie Laufer-Krebs, 2005

Freddie Highmore is a bigwig in Hollywood. Sure, he's just 12 years old. But the young British actor is starring in this summer's hot ticket, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about a boy who wins a trip to the ultimate candy store. And last year he stole scenes out from under Johnny Depp in Finding Neverland and hung out with real tigers in Two Brothers.

You were the only actor Johnny Depp wanted to work with on his next film, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. How flattering was that?
"I was so excited! I found out in a great way, too. Me and my family were visiting the Grand Canyon and watching a sunset when the call came through to say that I got the part of Charlie."

What was it like working on Charlie and what can we expect from the movie this summer?
"It was fantastic shooting Charlie because I thought there were going to be all these blue-screen effects and that we were going to have to pretend. However, all the sets were built from scratch. Plus, I got to shoot in London where I live, so that was great."

What did you learn from Johnny and Kate Winslet on the Finding Neverland set?
"Johnny is fantastic and such a wonderful guy and was like a big kid. I learned that both he and Kate are just normal people and they treat you the same way that any other normal person would and that was a great thing. Kate treated us in a motherly way so it created a family atmosphere."

How did you get the role of Peter Llewelyn Davies (the boy who inspires Peter Pan) in Finding Neverland?
"I started off doing small parts on TV and then the parts started to get bigger and bigger. Then I got the role in Finding Neverland which was my first big film. I just went for a normal audition along with hundreds of kids and I got the part."

What was it like working with Johnny Depp?
"It was weird, because all these Johnny Depp fans were always hanging around the set screaming, "We love you Johnny!"

You've been so busy making movies lately-do you have time to just be a kid and have some fun?
"I try to be a normal kid as much as possible and on the weekends I play soccer with my friends."

What was it like to hang out with real tigers in the movie Two Brothers?
"That was amazing! I spent days just looking at them in amazement. The full-grown ones were quite scary. There was a tiger man who kept a close eye on them and told me, "Don't forget that they're tigers because they'll never forget that you can be lunch!"
