Homework Pays Off For Highmore

Boston Now, 2007
By John Black

Hollywood is full of method actors, but not too many of them are just 15 years old and already have more than a half-dozen hit films on their resume. But as he explained in an interview to promote his latest film, August Rush, Freddie Highmore believes the only way to play a character is to be that character as much as possible.

One of the ways this movie works comes from the joy of playing music. Is it hard to capture that on screen?

I don't know if you can fake it. I actually learned to play the songs on the guitar because I think if you're actually playing the music it's the real emotions that come out.

So that's really you playing in the movie. How difficult was it to learn the songs.

About six months beforehand I started practicing. The most important thing was to get it to look right, but I actually did learn the songs I was playing. The harder thing was learning how to conduct an orchestra for the final scene. I didn't want to pretend to conduct and wave my arms around. I wanted to do it properly.

Do you think the movie is a sort of modern fairy tale?

I guess it is somewhat fantastical, but at the same time it's not so unbelievable that three people who love each other end up together. Many people in life find someone who they think they are meant to be with. Out of the entire world they know that's the one for me. So it's not that unbelievable.

But do you think it's too sentimental?

In the last few years there haven't been too many sentimental movies. I guess it's not something the blokes would go to see very much. They'd say it was a soppy thing and would rather go see someone kill people over and over again. But I think you should go. It's a good date movie.
