Exclusive Freddie-Highmore.org Interview (2005)

Freddie Highmore Online, 2005

I wrote to Freddie in early September and sent him some questions and asked him if he would answer them, interview style, for me to add to the site. Freddie kindly sent me back the answers to all his questions which I proudly present to you now as an exclusive interview to Freddie Highmore Online. You can view a scan of the last page of his letter to me (with some of his answers on) in the image archive.

You had already worked with Johnny Depp in 'Finding Neverland' before you made 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' but it was also your second time working with Helena Bonham Carter. Was it nice to be able to work with her again?
I've been really fortunate to work with some of the best people in the entertainment industry. If anybody knows anything about me it is that I admire Johnny Depp. Helena Bonham Carter is from the same part of North London as me and we live pretty close to each other. Anyone would be lucky to work with Helena once so to have worked with her twice...!

Was 'Women Talking Dirty' your first ever acting job or had you appeared in any TV commercials etc. before?
Before "Women Talking Dirty" I had a small role in a Peter Kosminsky film about bullying but the scene was cut. I probably only got the part because I was the youngest kid they'd seen who could remember the lines!

You recently completed filming 'Arthur and the Minimoys' and you have confirmed in interviews that you will be appearing in 'Awful End', but can you confirm if you will be appearing in 'August Rush' with Robin Williams and Liv Tyler?
Yes, I've finished "Arthur and the Minimoys". "Awful End" is not happening now and so I have been back in France playing Russell Crowe as a boy in the Ridley Scott film "A Good Year". I am scheduled to do a film with Robin Williams and Liv Tyler in New York called "August Rush". It's about a boy named August Rush who manages to find his parents through music.

Have you managed to keep in touch with the other kids from 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'?
Because I've been doing publicity for "Charlie..." I have seen the other kids from the movie which is nice.

In "Women Talking Dirty", your on-screen brother is credited as 'Bertie Highmore'. Is he your real brother or is it just an amazing coincidence?
Bertie, my real brother, and I do play brothers in "Women Talking Dirty". Bertie's my only sibling. He's the absolute best.

You have said in some interviews that you don't neccessarily want to continue acting when you are older. What do you want to do instead?
I'm not sure what I'd like to do when I'm older. I'm trying to keep my options open by staying on track with my school work.

If you could make any book into a film, what book would it be?
It would be pretty cool if I could just pick up a novel to make into a film. Actually all the books I read at the moment are from a long, l--o--n--g list which my school has sent out and which I can't see how I'm ever going to get even halfway through!

You have said that you like to play football with your friends when you aren't busy working. What else to do you like to do for fun?
Yes, I like sport and soccer in particular. I play for my school and at weekends. I support my local team, Arsenal, and try to go to as many home games as I can. I've started to learn the guitar. I probably spend too much time on the computer and don't get enough free time just hanging out with my mates.

You have travelled to so many different places promoting your various films. Where have you enjoyed the most?
Of all the places that I've been to work I enjoyed Cambodia most. It was so different from my usual life in London and I got to spend my days with new born tiger cubs.

People really are interested to know what your favourite things are so we'd be thrilled if you could just complete this list of 'favourites' for us!
So long as I can change all my choices tommorow, my favourites are:

Color: Blue (but not Chelsea!)

Music: Bert chooses what blasts round our house!
